Our society and culture is not geared at the education or support of new parents or intuitive parenting. We are one of the ONLY countries that does not have paid family leave as a federal requirement for new parents. Because of our fast-paced and money-driven society, we tend to be taught more “hands off” parenting that encourages disconnect from the child and the parent. Whether you are struggling to connect because of societal issues- or maybe, your own childhood comes up when you are parenting, we can help.
Here are some common signs of parent burnout that may be a good indicator that you are in need of some guidance:
Feeling irritated, short-tempered or lacking in patience with your children
Snapping or yelling at your children, physical or verbal abuse (including spanking)
Repetitive, failed discipline techniques
Feeling disconnected from your children and/or spouse
Feeling “zoned out” while with your children/family (the most common form of this is excessive screen time)
Feeling exhausted yet not being able to get to sleep
Poor eating habits/lifestyle choices, and a general lack of self-care
Parenting is hard! It is even harder when you don’t have an outlet to discuss parenting issues and how to approach them. The parenting issues we address can generally be put into these different categories:
Issues due to current stressors/societal factors
New parent adjustment (this is a big one for fathers as well as mothers!)
Breastfeeding support
Conscious parenting
Issues from childhood (C-PTSD or childhood trauma) showing up in the form of triggers while parenting
Perinatal and postpartum depression
Connecting better with children from a positive discipline approach
Encouraging practicing more intuitive parenting
Martha and Ryan are both Attached at the Heart Certified Parent Educators (CAHPEs) and offer parenting education classes where many of these issues are addressed. We are both passionate parents ourselves and believe that this preliminary work is what can help eliminate the need for intervention in future generations. If you are interested in exploring these issues individually, we can help. If you are interested in our Attachment Parenting class, please let us know. It is never to late to backtrack and do some healing with your child to develop a strong, solid foundation and connection and experience the benefits of conscious parenting.
